Set on Kerala’s Vypin Island, Delighted with the Ideal Situation follows Raji, a folk singer from a coastal fishing community and one of the last remaining voices of her generation. Over the course of a day, the film observes her pursuit of a PhD while balancing work, family, and the weight of inherited knowledge.
Through songs, conversations, and everyday moments, the documentary traces how oral traditions endure across generations. As older custodians fade away, Raji finds herself between learning and teaching, carrying fragments of a cultural legacy to her young son.
The title is drawn from a remark left by Mahatma Gandhi in the visitor’s book of Raji’s college nearly a century ago: “Delighted with the ideal situation.” Echoing across time, the phrase lends an unexpected frame to her journey of education, perseverance, and hope.
